Man United development 'an absolute disgrace' - Campbell

Man United will be “happier” after the UEFA round of 16 redraw, according to Kevin Campbell.

However, the ex-Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, called the series of events that unfolded in Nyon, Switzerland, “an absolute disgrace”.

Man United initially drew Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League draw on Monday.

However, the ties announced were later declared void by UEFA after a “technical problem”.

As confirmed by UEFA after a redraw (13 December), the Red Devils will now face Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of Europe’s premier competition.

Campbell, who delivered weekly punditry for La Liga TV last season, claimed Atletico Madrid “aren’t the side there were last season”.

“I think Man United will be happier with the second draw,” he told Football Insider.

“PSG would have been a prize tie given [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi.

“I think Man United will fancy their chances more against Atletico Madrid though. Atletico aren’t the side they were last season, that is for sure.

“The draw was an absolute farce though. It was an absolute disgrace.

“There is only so many teams you can choose. How can you get that wrong?

“Some clubs will always come out better or worse of the second draw. In my eyes, it is not right.”

United travel to the Wanda Metropolitano for the first leg of their round of 16 tie on 23 February.

The return leg at Old Trafford will be staged on 15 March.
