Man United are not interested in signing Aston Villa star John McGinn ahead of the summer window, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League giants were first linked with the Scotland international in 2019 and again during his excellent debut Premier League campaign last season.

Football Insider has been told by a well-placed recruitment source that United's interest in McGinn, 26, at those times was genuine and he was on their target list.

But that is no longer the case as they believe the central midfielder has "hit the barrier" and "he's nowhere near the player he was" before his injury last season.

McGinn fractured his ankle in December 2019 and was sidelined until the first lockdown ended in June of last year.

He has subsequently failed to hit the same heights of the form displayed in Villa's promotion-winning campaign and the first half of their return Premier League season.

McGinn had caught the eye with his running power, especially when the team were initially struggling back in the top flight.

United were among many top clubs watching McGinn closely and there was talk of potential £60million bids.

But there is now a feeling that the Scot lacks the vision and technical quality to play at Champions League level.

United are putting together their target list of midfielders for the summer but McGinn is not expected to be among them.

The club believe the Villa man is not better than their central midfield regulars Fred, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.
