Man United expected to seal £58m Frenkie de Jong deal after journalist's update - pundit

Noel Whelan expects Man United to agree a fee in the region of £58million with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker is confident that the two clubs will “find a middle ground” before the window closes.

Man United had their first bid for De Jong, 25, rejected by Barcelona.

According to Fabrizio Romano (19 June), the Red Devils have remained in talks with the La Liga giants and a new and improved bid is under serious consideration.

The Netherlands international has four years remaining on his contract at the Nou Camp.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Whelan said: “You’d think they would want to do the deal.

“Let’s be honest, they need the money at that football club. Man United need midfielders. It is a triangle that would make sense.

“Barcelona will not want to let him go for less than he’s worth though. He is still very young. He has his best football ahead of him.

“They need to find a compromise. Man United need the player and Barcelona need the money.

“£50million is a healthy offer but when you look at someone like De Jong, an international who can command the midfield area, he’s probably worth a lot more.

“I’m sure they will find a middle ground at some point. I think somewhere around £58million.”
