Man United 'fear' Newcastle after 'incredible' Staveley reveal via Sky - pundit

The top English clubs will be worried to hear Newcastle United’s new owners aspire to win the Premier League title, according to Kevin Phillips.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool will fear the Magpies becoming “the next Man City”.

On Thursday (October 7th), the Premier League confirmed that Mike Ashley had successfully sold the north-east club to the PCP Capital Partners consortium for £305million.

Speaking to Sky Sports a day later, new Newcastle director Amanda Staveley revealed the consortium’s long-term aim is to win the Premier League title.

Man City were taken over by Sheikh Mansour in September 2008 and won the English top flight four years later.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Staveley’s comments, Phillips said:

“The top Premier League clubs like Man United and Liverpool will be worried hearing that. They will fear Newcastle going on to be the next Man City. But, it is of no concern to anyone else really. You just have to worry about your own house and deal with it.

“Nobody foresaw Man City going on to the heights they did. Will Newcastle get there? Who nows.

“I think it’s good news for football in general though because you want a club like them up at the top of the league challenging.

“It is a great area and a great place to go and play. We have seen some incredible players there over the years. It’s the start of some hopefully very exciting times.”
