Finance guru: Man United have just agreed 'really smart' deal amid latest from California

Man United are “really smart” to use a tiered sponsorship system that allows commercial partners to scale up their investment in the club.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ new deal with Therabody.

United signed with the wellness brand several years ago, but they announced last Wednesday (7 September) that they have now upgraded the package to a global partnership.

The deal, which was described by the club as a “multi-year” agreement, will see United further implement Therabody technology at Carrington and Old Trafford.

The California-based company will also continue to market through the club’s digital channels and in the stadium on matchdays.

United raked in £232million in sponsorship and merchandising income in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.

Plumley saluted their use of the tiered sponsorship system to boost this figure even further.

“It’s really smart,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“When it comes to maximising revenue, having that tiered approach allows for upgrades. You can see how the relationship works and then upgrade it it’s working well.

“It’s smart because it de-risks the original investment for both parties.

So, it makes sense from a business point of view and it’s quite a clever way of doing things.

You can grow incrementally with current partners and it takes the pressure off trying to find new ones.
