Kieran Maguire: Man United have 'no alternative' as £20m payment given green light after Sky reveal
Man United have “no alternative” but to shell out on renovations at Old Trafford now the option to be subsidised by other clubs is off the table.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the big-money Glazer-sanctioned revamp.
As per Sky Sports on 18 August, United have spent £20million on upgrading media amenities, barrier seating, disabled facilities and the dressing rooms.
It is part of a long-term project to fresh up Old Trafford, which critics say has been neglected in recent years.
But Maguire argues that United’s original plan was for the upgrades to be financed by other clubs.
“It’s been a long time coming,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Under Project Big Picture and the Super League, there was going to be a central pot of money that could be used for infrastructure spending.
“I think that’s part of the reason why United has committed itself to spending this money. They were effectively looking for the pot to be subsidised by other clubs.
“Now that neither of those monstrosities are going to take place, United have no alternative.
“They are also conscious of the noises coming from many sources that Old Trafford is looking a bit shabby.
“If Man United want to host another Champions League or something of that nature, they need to get people onside.
They have spent £88m on infrastructure over the last decade. That compares to £373m at Man City, £249m at Liverpool.
“You would expect a club of the magnitude of Man United to be averaging more than that.“
