Man United news: Pundit tells Harry Maguire to 'shut it' after 'stupid' statement

Man United star Harry Maguire needs to “shut up” and focus on his own game.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest on the defender.

The Mirror reported on Sunday (12 June) that the 29-year-old is set for talks with Erik ten Hag over his position as captain.

It is claimed the England star is “desperate” to remain in the role he has held since January 2020 – just a few months after his blockbuster £80million move from Leicester City.

As quoted by The Sun on Wednesday (15 June) Maguire backed Gareth Southgate after England’s poor UEFA Nations League campaign.

McAvennie claims the defender needs to focus on his own game.

“One thing I have heard about Ten Hag, I don’t know him, but one thing I have heard about Ten Hag is that he doesn’t suffer fools,”

“He also isn’t a sentimental guy. Keeping the captaincy, I think it is a big ask to be Man United captain, a huge ask.

“If you aren’t playing well and you have that captaincy, it’s not right.

“It has been long enough for Maguire. He doesn’t do himself and favours as well. He is always in the papers, shut up and get on with the game.

“Go and sort your own game out. He’s coming out with stupid statements like Southgate is the best manager since 66, do me a favour.”

Maguire endured a torrid 2021-22 season as Man United finished with their lowest ever points tally in the Premier League era.

He played 30 top-flight games and was dropped to the bench on a number of occasions.
