Man United tipped to axe David de Gea after source's £45m reveal - pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Emiliano Martinez will replace David de Gea as first choice goalkeeper at Man United if he leaves Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said a team wouldn’t spend £45million on a player for them to sit on the bench.

On 26 September, sources told this site that Man United are “keeping close tabs” on Martinez.

The Villans value the shotstopper at around £45m following his £20m move from Arsenal in 2020.

The 30-year-old currently has five years left on his contract at Villa Park after signing an extension in January of this year.

According to The Telegraph (24 September), the Red Devils are deciding whether to trigger De Gea’s one-year contract option.

The 31-year-old’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of this season but includes the option of a 12-month extension.

Hutton claimed that De Gea could be axed from the starting XI if Martinez completes a move.

It just depends how they see De Gea moving forward,” he told Football Insider.

“Is he the number one? Or are they looking to replace him? If you’re looking to pay £45m plus for a goalkeeper it’s for him to come in and play. You don’t spend that amount of money on someone to sit on the bench. I wouldn’t anyway if I was in charge of a football team.

Martinez has done really well since he’s been at Aston Villa, he had a lot of time on the bench at Arsenal, he’s progressed from that. I wouldn’t like to see him leaving because this is the first time in a long time Aston Villa have had a goalkeeper that everybody totally trusts, you feel at ease when he’s in the goal. If it’s £45m he has to be number one.
