Man United tipped to bin Fred and three other big names in midfield 'clear out' - pundit

Man United will look to get rid of Nemanja Matic, Fred, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba this summer.

That is the view of former Sunderland and England striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “main area of concern” at Old Trafford.

Fred, Matic and Pogba struggled in a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Pogba’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of this June, as does Juan Mata’s.

However, Fred and Matic have just over 14 months remaining on their current deals.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Matic and Fred’s displays, Phillips said: “They’re not good enough for Man United.

“Matic has been but not anymore. He’s been there a long time. He is not the player he used to be.

“For Man United to get back to the level that they want, those sorts of players will be moving on in the summer.

“There will be a clear out. I think Matic, Fred and Juan Mata will all be gone by next season. They need to freshen it up. Pogba will also be gone.

“There will be a big a burn around the players at United this summer and it is needed. The midfield is the main area of concern for me.”

Fred has been a regular for the Red Devils this season and has made 33 appearances across all competitions.

Matic has 26 appearances to his name this term.
