Man United tipped to sign 'incredible' McTominay upgrade after journalist's Twitter update - pundit

Kevin Phillips has insisted “incredible” Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves would be an upgrade on Man United midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 23-year-old has developed into a “top-class Premier League player”.

As per Talksport’s Alex Crook on Twitter (5 January), interest in Wolves star Ruben Neves is building, with Man United reportedly looking at the Portugal midfielder.

Neves would become the first signing under Ralf Rangnick’s stewardship.

The German boss replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

Phillips insisted the “quality” Portugal international will have “no problem” breaking into Man United’s midfield.

“He’s a quality player,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He’s one of those players that always wants to get on the ball. For me, I think he’s an upgrade on McTominay and Fred.

“He’s got better distribution, he’s better on the ball – he’s absolute quality. He can score goals as well.

“I remember sitting on the bench at Molineux when Derby played Wolves, he scored that volley – incredible.

“He has developed into a top-class Premier League player. From a Wolves point of view, it’ll be gutting. He will have no problems getting into that Man United midfield – he’s fantastic.”

Neves has been almost ever-present for Wolves this term, scoring once in 18 Premier League games.

Man United are sitting four points outside the top four with one game in hand on fourth-placed Arsenal.
