Man United told to accept Henderson offer as Newcastle swoop reported

Kevin Phillips has urged Man United to allow Dean Henderson to leave the club in search of regular first-team football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker fears the 24-year-old has little prospect at Old Trafford due to the form of current number one David de Gea.

Henderson has made just one appearance for the Red Devils this season, an EFL Cup defeat against West Ham in September.

According to the Daily Mail‘s Chris Wheeler (November 10th), the England international will look to quit United if he fails to take the number one shirt and Newcastle are an option for him.

The shot-stopper still has four-and-a-half years left on his current contract, which is worth a reported £120,000-a-week.

The Sun‘s Alan Nixon reported on Saturday that the club will sanction an 18-month loan deal for Henderson.

Newcastle are said to be interested in the player’s services.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the goalkeeper’s future, Phillips said: “It is unfortunate for Henderson.

“We all know that David de Gea is a world-class goalkeeper. He has had a couple of bad seasons but now he is back to his best. He has risen to the top again. Some of the saves he made against Man City were phenomenal.

“I understand why Henderson wants to leave. He is frustrated. He wants to play football and I give him credit for that.

“If he wants to get out there and play football you have to respect that. I hope United do the right thing and let him go.”
