Man United told to 'get rid' of Bailly after Mourinho report - pundit

Man United should “jump at the chance” to get “inconsistent” defender Eric Bailly off the books this month, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old has “too many mistakes” in his game to make the grade at Old Trafford.

According to Foot Mercato (25 January), AC Milan and Jose Mourinho’s Roma are interested in a loan move for Bailly – who is currently at the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.

Mourinho brought the defender to the Red Devils in June 2016, paying Villareal a reported £30million for his services.

Whelan suggested Bailly has “not been the player Man United expected him to be”.

“They should jump at the chance to get him off the books,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Hes another player who came in with an incredible amount of hype around him.

“But he’s not been the player they expected him to be, like many players who arrive at Old Trafford.

“He can be an incredible defender, but far too often there are too many mistakes in his game.

“He’s just too inconsistent, and that isn’t what they need.

“He’s played under many managers, and they’ve decided to bring Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof all in ahead of him.

“He’s not going to get in that team it’s best for Man United to get rid. He’ll want to play some first-team football again.”

Bailly has made just three Premier League starts for Man United this season.

The Ivorian has struggled with injury during his six-year stint at Old Trafford, missing a total of 99 games (per Transfermarkt).

In other news, Whelan predicts Man United could complete £60million deal for Premier League star.
