Enzo Maresca is set to be announced as Man City's new manager before the end of June as their players prepare to return for pre-season next month.

City have chosen Maresca as their top candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola following his emotional departure at the end of last season.

Guardiola still had one year left on his contract, but indicated last month that he would be stepping down after nine years as the Citizens' boss.

He is believed to have had a say on who the club should appoint next, with former assistant Maresca in the frame to take over soon.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, City want him in place as their new manager before July, with a deal still on track to be completed soon.

The hold-up around an official announcement is due to a struggle to agree a suitable compensation package with his former employers, Chelsea.

Chelsea parted ways with the Italian boss back in January, but believe they are owed around £10million now that he is nearing a return to management.

Maresca won two major trophies in his 18-month tenure as Chelsea manager, boasting a 59.78 per cent win record across his Stamford Bridge spell.

City fans can expect him to be formally announced as their next manager soon, with their first pre-season fixture set for 5 August against a K-League All Stars side.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I think officials from the clubs are working hard to agree a suitable package. And I think once that's finalised, you'll see this move for Maresca confirmed.

"Look, it’s just the finer details I think that need to be sorted as well in that respect as well. I would expect that Manchester City will be keen to get this deal sealed and done as soon as possible, and I'm sure they'll be looking to have it done before the end of the month, before everybody returns for preseason in July.

"So it's an ongoing process, but there's no worries from the City side...they still feel that they can get this deal done with Maresca as soon as possible."

Rodri will 'leave' Man City 'on a free transfer'

Rodri to leave Man City on a free transfer next summer

Rodri's future has been up in the air for several months since he indicated in March that he would be open to joining Real Madrid this summer.

The former Ballon d'Or winner struggled to keep fit throughout 2025-26 and is about to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

Despite recent rumours, football finance expert and former Man City advisor, Stefan Borson, has exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Rodri is not expected to leave the club this summer.

Madrid are interested, but are not set to act by making a move this summer, with the 30-year-old instead set to walk away from the Etihad for free in 2027.
