'It's the worst outcome' - Stefan Borson: Man City 'will be relegated' in bombshell verdict

Published on:

Manchester City face the very real prospect of being relegated from the Premier League, but it is not known to which division.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that expulsion to League Two is unlikely, but clearly not impossible.

The Citizens have lodged an appeal against the 114 charges that the club was found guilty of, with the process likely to be ongoing for much longer.

Understandably, supporters across the Premier League are furious, and many have suggested what the punishment should be, ranging from points deductions to transfer bans, to stripping of titles.

Expulsion to League Two has also been an idea, taking a leaf out of the SPFL's book, dumping Rangers in the third division back in 2012.

Of course, the two situations are very different, but football fans across the globe feel very strongly that multiple relegations is the deserved outcome.

'Man City will be relegated, but not to League Two'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson can understand the uproar, but admitted that relegation to League Two is "pretty unlikely".

"Well, it's obviously pretty unlikely, but there's a storm at the moment and I think it's very hard to pick through what those sanctions might be," he said.

"We're just not at that point yet. They're obviously going to be severe. We've spoken about it many times. From the very first day, I explained to people that the punishment would be severe and that City would be relegated.

"I think people now maybe understand that and maybe didn't understand it when I said it. But it's just inevitable that one way or the other, there's going to be a relegation of some sort.

"The question is the mechanism and what other bits and pieces they try and throw at the club. But obviously that depends on the appeal.

"But as we sit here right now, they couldn't have expected a worse outcome from this hearing."

Which players would Man City have to call upon?

Man City would basically be forced to start over if they were relegated to League Two, especially if a multi-window transfer ban is installed.

Ultimately, the Citizens would have to fall back on a very talented academy, which has created stars like Phil Foden, Nico O'Reilly, James McAtee and Liam Delap.

Right now, Ryan McAidoo and Josh Wilson-Esbrand are trying to break into the senior set-up, while several others are impressing on loan.

Jaden Heskey, Sheffield Wednesday, Jeremy Monga, Swansea City, and Divine Mukasa, West Ham United, would all make incredible impacts at the Etihad.
