Marc Guehi's appalling first touch led to Nicolas Jackson's opener as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was hooked at half-time after the mistake, and was responsible for two huge mistakes at Villa Park.

Gianluigi Donnarumma allowed Jackson's low shot to spill under him for the striker's second after Erling Haaland had equalised.

It has been a up and down start to the season for Guehi, who has struggled at times despite Man City's fine form under Enzo Maresca.

The defender, who arrived from Crystal Palace in January in a deal worth £20million, has shown a tendency to make a rare error.

Guehi's poor back pass led to the Everton comeback in May that saw Man City drop key points in the title race.

Ex-Liverpool star rips into Marc Guehi after Aston Villa moment

A strong start to the game was always going to be crucial for Man City, who were to face a Villa side in fine form.

Guehi gave them the complete opposite, in a moment that he will not want to remember for too long.

The England international attempted to touch down a high ball but made a complete mess of it, gifting the ball straight to John McGinn.

The Villa captain gave the ball to Jackson, who drove into the box and finished superbly over the arms of Donnarumma.

Guehi would be caught out again later in the half, dragging down the Senegal international when he looked to burst into the box again and receiving a yellow card for his troubles.

He was hooked at the break, in what will go down as a particular low point in his Man City career so far.

Commentating live for the Premier League, Jim Beglin said: "Just looking back to the Ipswich game, he was guilty of mistakes there but Marc Guehi has frankly embarrassed himself with his touch here, just to play it right into the feet of John McGinn."

Guehi facing selection questions

Anything but instant improvement from Guehi in the coming days could easily see the centre-back lose his place in the Man City team.

Maresca has the option of moving Josko Gvardiol or Abdukodir Khusanov into the position, with Nico O'Reilly and Rayan Ait-Nouri waiting in the wings.

The Italian will be keen to avoid making a hasty decision on Guehi, who has usually represented a player he can depend on.

With dependence comes expectation, however, and the England international must now respond.
