Man City charges: Update on punishment and potential points deduction
Manchester City will be told their possible sanctions for their 114 charges before the season ends, sources have told Football Insider.
The scandal has rocked the Premier League after the Citizens were found guilty of 114 breaches of the league's rules.
Enzo Maresca's side have appealed the outcome, and that process is currently underway.
As I reveal on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, the next steps following that process are outlined should the appeal be unsuccessful.
Punishment will then be laid down on Man City, with many hoping and suggesting a huge points deduction, an extended transfer ban, massive fine as well as even titles being stripped.
But until then, the situation does remain in limbo.
Man City face anxious wait as independent panel awaits once appeal is concluded
If Manchester City's appeal fails, then the Citizens could be facing some harsh sanctions placed upon them.
The level of breaches deemed to have been made is unprecedented and has put the Premier League into disrepute.
The legal implications for the Citizens are also a danger, with many clubs reserving the right to sue.
However, before any sanctions are placed on the Etihad outfit, the next step following the appeals will be for an independent panel to convene to make the decision.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I shared: "It’s hard to know when these sanctions, if any, will be made. Obviously, City have appealed.
"We’re waiting to find out the outcome of that appeal, and then after that we’ll have more to talk about what the sanctions can be when that independent panel then will meet to discuss those situations.
"There are many uncertainties involved in terms of the timing, and it is a complex situation, but the punishment, should the appeal fail, will be decided this season. It has to be or otherwise the season is effectively meaningless."
How harshly could Man City be punished?
Many football fans have called for Man City to be relegated all the way down the EFL pyramid, and to start rebuilding in League Two.
However, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson previously told Football Insider that it is an "unlikely" sanction to be handed down.
Instead, the Citizens are likely to be relegated to the Championship with a hefty points deduction still on the table.
Borson has said the sanctions will be "severe", and non-Man City supporters around the United Kingdom and across the globe will be hoping that is the case.
