Man City match 'Chelsea's moves' amid 'incredible' transfer twist
Manchester City have taken a leaf out of Chelsea's book in the way they have gone about their business this summer.
That is the opinion of experienced former Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
It has been a summer of change for the Citizens, with a number of players leaving alongside Pep Guardiola.
Man City have made over £300million worth of sales to offset a string of incomings that will likely exceed that figure by the end of Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez are among the fringe players to have left for big figures, with Enzo Maresca seemingly happy to part ways with many who arrived in the final years of Guardiola's reign.
Cody Gakpo is expected to join the club from Liverpool in an £85million deal before the deadline, while Man City remain interested in a late move for Enzo Fernandez.
Man City transfers among 'strange moves'
Chelsea have established themselves as the club for flipping young talents in recent years.
The Blues have signed player after player, often selling them for a profit if they do not make it into the starting XI.
It is far from a new model for Chelsea, however, with a similar plan taking place when Frank Arnesen was at the club between 2005 and 2011, first as an academy manager and later a sporting director.
"There's been some strange moves this summer. Look at the money that Manchester City have brought in from players that they've moved this summer," King told Football Insider.
"And these are players who've not really been out and out regulars in the City team. They seem to have gone down that trail of what Chelsea did when Frank Arnesen was there and [Jose] Mourinho. Bringing in young players and selling them for big money.
"Manchester City certainly have been selling players for big money. I mean, the money that's been spent in this window is incredible, isn't it? How many billion is it? I mean, it must be adding up now, big time."
Premier League to break further spending records
The Premier League's spending continues to grow to more and more extraordinary levels.
Last summer saw a staggering £3.14bn spent by Premier League clubs - a record figure that blew 2023's £2.36bn spend out of the water.
This summer's spending has already exceeded 2023's total, and could still top last summer in the final hours of the transfer window.
There appears to be no end in sight for the rising costs, with the Premier League propelling further and further away from the rest of Europe's leagues.
