Man City to make Phil Foden announcement after 'agreement in principle'
Phil Foden is close to formalising a new contract at Manchester City after reaching an agreement months ago, sources have told Football Insider.
The 26-year-old endured a frustrating season last time out which ultimately saw him miss out on Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup.
However, Man City have no long-term concerns about the midfielder, and hope he will get back to his best under new management following Enzo Maresca's appointment.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Foden is set to extend his stay at Man City despite speculative links with a move away.
The England international reached an agreement in principle with Man City in May, and while confirmation of the new deal has been slow, talks have progressed positively.
As a result, Foden is expected to formally put pen to paper in the near future, easing any doubts about his future with one year remaining on his current deal.
Will Phil Foden sign a new contract at Man City?
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider in May that Man City are set to show their commitment to Foden with the offer of a new long-rerm contract.
The agreement in priciple would see him extend his Man City contract until 2030 in a commitment from the club and the player to his continued role as one of their best.
Despite what was an underwhelming season last time out, all parties remain keen to reach an agreement, and that is now expected to be confirmed in due course.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Manchester City still have full confidence in Phil Foden and see him as an important part of their plans.
"He reached an agreement in principle over a new deal around May time before the end of the season.
"Obviously that hasn't been confirmed as yet but all expectation is that he will sign this new four-year deal at Manchester City to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030.
"There's also the option to extend the deal by a futher year, which probably will be something they look to do if things go well over the duration of the contract."
Which clubs were interested in signing Foden?
Should Foden not commit to a new contract at the Etiahd, there have been a number of high-profile clubs keeping a close eye on his situation, with one year left on his current deal.
Clubs across Europe have been long-term admirers of the Man City academy product, with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich having previously been linked.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed in May that Premier League rivals were considering luring Foden away from Man City, with Arsenal among those linked with a move.
However, the midfielder has no plans to leave the Etihad any time soon and hopes to continue his development as a key part of the team under Maresca's management.
Signing a new contract will come as a blow to his many suitors, but is great news for Man City, who have long been keen for him to commit his future.
