Manchester City: Rodri future looks clearer after Real Madrid election results
Manchester City fans would have been keeping a close eye to the outcome of Real Madrid's presidential election.
The election saw Enrique Riquelme go up against the incumbent president Florentino Perez, with the latter winning the vote to extend his reign until 2030.
Rodri failed to commit his future to Man City, saying that he will wait until after the World Cup before deciding on his next club.
The 29-year-old, who has a year left on his Man City contract, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Riquelme had vowed to sign the Spaniard should he have been elected president.
With Perez instead elected, the 79-year-old has committed to spending £150million on a mystery player from outside the Premier League, which would make a move for Rodri unlikely.
Rodri future at Man City remains uncertain
With only a year remaining on his contract, Man City should certainly be open to letting Rodri leave at the right price this summer.
However, Man City should also want to tie Rodri down to a new contract at the Etihad, regardless of whether they sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
The departure of captain Bernardo Silva has already left a sizeable gap to fill in midfield for Man City's next manager, which is expected to be Enzo Maresca.
Pep Guardiola's Man City exit though has raised further questions about Rodri's future at the club this summer, as sources told Football Insider.
Enzo Maresca could convince Rodri to stay
Man City are currently in talks with Chelsea over compensation for Maresca, but an agreement is expected to be reached.
The Italian knows Rodri well from his time as assistant manager under Guardiola at Man City during the 2022-23 season.
A familiar face in the dugout may convince Rodri to stay in the Premier League, although he has previously stated that he would like to return to Spain before the end of his career.
Rodri has been at Man City since 2019, playing a vital role in the club winning four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, and his experience could be key for Maresca to succeed.
