Man City fans say the same thing about Rico Lewis after what happened vs Bournemouth
Manchester City fans are furious with Rico Lewis’ display on Sunday after their 2-1 victory against Bournemouth.
Enzo Maresca’s side had to stage a late comeback to pick up all three points at the Etihad, as Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol both netted late on.
However, there were also plenty of concerning displays, with Lewis having a poor game at right-back.
The 21-year-old struggled to hold down the right side of the pitch defensively and was eventually brought off just after the hour mark.
As a result, many Man City fans are now starting to question whether the England international is good enough to start in the team.
Lewis was a regular last season and made 22 appearances in all competitions as City won both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Man City fans question Rico Lewis’ defensive awareness
Since making his debut in 2022, Lewis has been a mainstay in the City squad.
Overall, he has made 117 appearances at the club and has helped them win numerous trophies.
However, throughout this period, he has never been able to hold down a place in the starting XI.
Sunday’s showing perhaps showed why, as the right-back struggled defensively throughout and also created little going forward.
As a result, the defender was slammed by Man City fans, who are now beginning to question his role in the team.
How bad was Lewis against Bournemouth?
Lewis’ performance against Bournemouth certainly left a lot to be desired.
According to Fotmob on 23 August, the full-back failed to create a single chance, missed one big chance, did not complete any attempted dribbles, failed to complete any of his two attempted crosses, was dispossessed four times, made zero tackles and only won two out of his attempted nine ground duels.
For the high standards Man City demand, this performance was obviously not good enough and was a key reason why the hosts were losing for a good portion of the match.
However, with Lewis still being young, there is every chance that he can use this opportunity to grow and develop further.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if the full-back will now lose his place in the starting XI as City prepare to travel to Crystal Palace on Friday.
