Manchester City are hoping Vincent Kompany will become their manager at some point in the future.

That is according to former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Etihad Stadium chiefs will be keeping tabs on whether the Belgian continues to show he’s a “top-class manager” at Bayern Munich before making their move.

It follows plenty of speculation around Pep Guardiola’s future in recent months amid suggestions he could be set to leave the Manchester giants this summer.

The i Paper reported on 6 May Enzo Maresca is “ready and waiting” to replace Guardiola if he decides to step down over the coming weeks.

However, the newspaper revealed sources close to the club said Kompany being appointed as Man City manager in a few years after Maresca has overseen a transition is “inevitable”.

How Man City are approaching Pep Guardiola replacement plan

Maresca is a free agent after leaving Chelsea in January following his public fallout with the board at Stamford Bridge.

Kompany is also among the favourites to replace Guardiola this summer, but he’s under contract with Bayern Munich until June 2029.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed Man City’s reported plans to replace Guardiola.

“I don't really believe that you can plan in that way,” said Borson.

“You've got a long list of candidates. Clearly, there's one in particular where in terms of Kompany that you would say at some point, you'd probably hope that he would be the manager if he can continue showing that he's a top-class manager.

“It's gone pretty well at Bayern, although it's always slightly tricky to judge it because the league itself is almost guaranteed every year.”

What Man City are hoping for Enzo Maresca

Borson insisted Man City will be hoping Maresca can stay for several years if he is appointed as Guardiola’s replacement.

“You're not telling me that they are planning for a situation where say Maresca comes in and fails,” said Borson.

“That would be ridiculous. Obviously, if he didn't fail and Maresca was successful at his age, he could stay for years and years.

“I don't think the story makes any sense, to be honest. They'll appoint somebody they think is going to succeed and, if he doesn't succeed, they'll replace him with somebody that they think will succeed, which is what all clubs do.

“I don't really buy that as a logical business planning strategy, and I don't believe it.”
