Stefan Borson names the three clubs 'key' to Man City's punishment
The Premier League have already set a clear precedent ahead of Manchester City's punishment being decided.
That is according to former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the three clubs' previous sanctions have set the parameters for the Citizens' punishment.
Man City's owners are currently in the process of appealing against an independent panel's guilty verdict on 114 charges related to financial breaches.
Fans up and down England have shared their thoughts on what sanction the eight-time Premier League winners deserve for their rule breaking.
These punishments have ranged from a simple points deduction to the stripping of titles, even to the more extreme of expulsion from the football pyramid.
It is believed, however, that punishments handed to Everton, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest in previous seasons should play a role in City's sanction.
The Premier League's policies have been 'well set out'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has stated that Man City's punishment must be proportionate to previous decisions, rather than just throwing the book at the Saudi owners.
"The punishments won't be decided by the other clubs. It doesn't matter what they think," he said.
"It doesn't matter that some clubs think a million points might not be enough. It's not really the way it will work.
"The way it will work is the Premier League will put forward their view of sanctioning, and then the policies around sanctioning will take place.
"The policies are quite well set out in Everton's appeal, in Chelsea's sanction agreement, and in Nottingham Forest's appeal.
"So the parameters around how you come up with the sanctions of theirs, it can't be disproportionate. And it can't be more than is necessary to achieve the aims of the disciplinary schemes."
What punishments were the Premier League trio given?
Everton were handed a total points deduction of eight points, one six-point and one two-point deduction, for the breaching of PSR regulations.
Forest were also given a points deduction for PSR-related breaches, facing a four-point deduction during the 2023-24 campaign.
And Chelsea have been punished by both the FA and Premier League in recent seasons, with the latter dating back to historic breaches in the Roman Abramovich era.
The FA intervened later on, also handing them the same punishment, a £10million fine and a two-window transfer ban.
