Tijjani Reijnders’ Netherlands display casts doubt over Ronald Koeman’s Man City verdict
Tijjani Reijnders' latest display for the Netherlands would not have helped secure his Manchester City future.
The 27-year-old only joined Man City last summer, but the midfielder fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola.
Reijnders was left on the bench for four of Man City's final five games of the season, and could already leave the club for more regular playing time elsewhere.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said last year, as per VI, that Reijnders' move to Man City was a "great step" in his career, but he is surely concerned about his lack of game time ahead of the World Cup.
The Netherlands have been warming up for the tournament with friendly matches against Uzbekistan and Algeria, both of which Reijnder's started, highlighting that Koeman still holds full trust in the midfielder despite his debut season in the Premier League having not gone to plan.
Reijnders is expected to keep his place in Koeman's starting line-up as the Dutch face Japan in their first game of the World Cup, and the tournament could provide a shop window for his next move.
Tijjani Reijnders fails to dominate against Uzbekistan
Koeman though, like Man City, may have been slightly concerned by Reijnders' display in the Netherlands' friendly against Uzbekistan.
The Dutch are 43 places above their Asian opponents in the FIFA world rankings, but they required two penalties from Cody Gakpo to secure a 2-1 win.
Reijnders missed two big chances in the match, won just one duel, committed two fouls and successfully completed just two of his six passes into the penalty area.
Sources have told Football Insider about interest from Serie A in Reijnders, and Man City could allow him to leave this summer.
Tijjani Reijnders' season tailed off after positive start
Despite scoring, and grabbing an assist, on his Premier League debut at Wolves, Reijnders' impact at Man City deteriorated as the season went on.
Reijnders ended the campaign with just five goals and two assists from midfield, a figure which Man City had hoped would be greater.
A return to Serie A, where Reijnders spent two years at AC Milan, could reignite his career.
Despite Guardiola having left Man City, incoming manager Enzo Maresca would not have been left impressed by Reijnders' international display.
