'It's very dangerous' - Rodri's Man City future hit by new 'complication'
Manchester City may allow Rodri to get a deal in place to join a new club before the end of the 2026-27 season.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Citizens still want to keep the midfielder for the upcoming season.
The 30-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid of late, while Barcelona have also begun sniffing around a deal.
However, Wyness believes that any move away from the Etihad Stadium is unlikely this summer, given that the player has just undergone back surgery.
Rodri starred for Spain this summer after they won the World Cup in North America, and that has sparked plenty of interest from La Liga's top clubs.
The veteran is out of contract at City in June 2027, meaning they are running out of time to secure a transfer fee for him.
Rodri's back injury to delay transfer
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Rodri's surgery on his back injury adds another "complication" to the saga surrounding his future.
The midfielder is out for a short period while he recovers, but Wyness believes that will "delay" any possible transfer as clubs wait to see if he returns to his best.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he stressed that it would be no surprise to see Rodri agree his next move during his final season with City.
"City side are actually playing pretty hard in terms of negotiation. Rodri's performance was just excellent in the World Cup, you know, winning the Golden Ball," Wyness said.
"There is one complication, he's just undergone back surgery as well, and that's another little complication that might just delay things, as they want to see how he comes out of that.
"Back surgery is never an easy thing; it's a very dangerous thing. They may even agree the perimeter of a transaction, but he could stay at City for this next season.
"So I don't really see it happening that quickly this summer."
Man City 'relaxed' about Rodri's future
Former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson recently told Football Insider that his former club are "relaxed" about Rodri's future, despite time rapidly running out on his contract.
He outlined that Enzo Maresca and Co. are happy to keep hold of their star for another campaign, knowing that it would come with the caveat of losing him on a free transfer.
However, Borson also emphasised that City will also be content with the idea of losing him for a "mediocre fee," if Real Madrid push forward towards a deal.
Rodri has been a key cog in City's success in recent years, and still managed 21 Premier League appearances last term despite battling several injuries.
