Man United will have the 'best in the world' after Varane update - Phillips

Kevin Phillips claims Manchester United are getting back to the era of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic with the signing of Raphael Varane.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Red Devils now have two of the best defenders in world football.

On 27th July, Manchester United announced they have agreed a deal in principle for Varane and are putting the finishing touches to the transfer.

The deal is now subject to a medical and the finalisation of personal terms.

Man United’s defence has been questioned in recent years especially under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s management.

However, Phillips claims the Red Devils are now capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League once again.

“You build a good side with a solid defence,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“Varane coming in alongside Harry Maguire, with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a very good backline.

“Wan-Bissaka is due a good season and Shaw was brilliant during the summer.

“From the era I played in when you had your Ferdinand’s and Vidic’s, it’s like Man United are getting back to that.

“Bringing in established players with that quality and in Varane they have that, he’s brilliant.

“I imagine the players are delighted, it gives you a load of confidence, especially for the attackers.

“They now have two of the best in the world for that position, maybe it’s a sign of the times that they are getting back to where they once were.”

Varane arrives at Old Trafford after a trophy-laden spell with Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old has won the World Cup with France as well as four Champions Leagues.
