'Absolutely shocking ' - Michael Carrick and Man United staff 'raging' after what they saw vs Man City

Michael Carrick and the Manchester United chiefs have been left raging at the officials after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Carrick's side suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford, despite City being down to ten men, but their frustrations are being directed elsewhere.

This comes after City's winning goal, scored by Erling Haaland, should have been disallowed for offside, resulting in an apology from Pro Ref following the game.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Pro Ref's apology is "worthless" and has done very little to ease the club's anger towards the officials.

The decision to let Haaland's goal stand was not the game's only controversy, as Phil Foden was sent off while Bruno Fernandes appeared to get away with a kick.

Meanwhile, the ball struck referee Michael Oliver multiple times, leading to added frustrations from the players on the pitch as they fought to get back into the game.

Why are Man United unhappy with the match officials?

Football Insider reported on 14 Septmeber that Wayne Rooney was left apalled after Haaland's winning goal was allowed to stand, and expressed his frustrations on Match of the Day.

Those grievances are now believed to be shared by the club and the manager, with everybody around Man United frustrated not only by the outcome, but the manner of it.

A string of poor decisions on both sides of the game ultimately damaged it as a contest, while United ultimiately fell to a defeat as a result of an incorrect call.

"Michael Carrick and the rest of the staff at Man United are raging, and I don't blame them at all," Brown told Football Insider.

"An apology from the referees association doesn't help at all, if anything it makes it worse because that's not going to change the result.

"There are lots of points about a game of football that you can analyse and dissect, but you expect the referees to do their job properly because that is totally out of your control.

"The referee had an absolutely shocking game, he kept getting in the way of the ball and was letting the players dictate issues in the game and he got almost every big decision wrong.

"Even Foden getting sent off, yes you can see why it's a red card and when players are on the floor that tends to be the outcome, but you can also see it the other way as well.

"And that's without even considering the offside goal, so there were far too many issues in the game from the officials, and it's simply not good enough."

Could Michael Carrick come under pressure at Man United?

A defeat at home to Man City is not expected to go down well with the supporters, as Man United have now won just one of their opening four Premier League games.

Carrick has recently batted away suggestions that results haven't been good enough, but their only win so far came against newly-promoted Ipswich at Old Trafford.

Football Insider revealed on 12 September tht Man United had hoped for a stronger start to the season and frustrations have begun to build as a result of their recent displays.

Having led United to a third-place finish last season, expectations on Carrick have been high heading into this term, as the club are keen to continue making progress.

While there is currently understood to be no immediate pressure on the manager's position, there is an acceptance that results must improve quickly.
