Michael Carrick should be extremely disappointed that his Manchester United side failed to beat the 10 men of Manchester City.

The controversy around Erling Haaland's winning goal will trundle on in the background for days to come, but the Red Devils had a huge advantage in the Manchester derby.

With Phil Foden given his marching orders in the 23rd minute for a foolish kick-out at Bruno Fernandes, all signs pointed towards three points remaining at Old Trafford on Sunday, 13 September.

The first came in the seventh minute, as Lisandro Martinez let fly from outside the box, but that was an easy one for the goalkeeper to collect.

Much later in the game, he sprang back to life, denying Fernandes from long range, then Bryan Mbeumo from 12 yards out in added time, with his shot registering an xG of 0.41 [FotMob].

The winger was slotted in by Man United's key playmaker, with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Mbeumo was ultimately left with his head in his hands.

Donnarumma's outstretched hand thwarted the Red Devils once again, but the save should not be taking away from the chance that United's No.19 had just wasted.

In a game of such few chances, even playing against 10 men, those are the ones that Carrick's most trusted players must be taking. He didn't, and it cost Man United.

What did Mbeumo's stats say about his overall performance?

Even without his game-defining miss in the fifth minute of added time, it was a rather disappointing performance from the former Brentford man.

During the game, Mbeumo, 27, only completed 74 per cent of his passes, registered a shot accuracy of 33 per cent, and completed zero of his attempted dribbles.

While he did create three chances, he only registered an xA of 0.08, suggesting that his teammates were very unlikely to convert them.

Defensively, he was dribbled past three times, won just 27 per cent of his ground duels and 17 per cent of his aerial duels, and was dispossessed twice.
