Harry Maguire: Man United ready to 'accept' new offer months after agreeing contract

Published on

Harry Maguire could be allowed to leave Manchester United this summer despite reaching an agreement over a new contract just months ago.

The 33-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal in April to extend his stay at Old Trafford until 2027, having previously been out of contract this summer.

However, that has provided no guarantees over his long-term future, with Michael Carrick’s side now believed to be open to offers at the right price.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he would be surprised if Maguire was moved on, but the club have not ruled it out.

This comes after Thomas Tuchel left him out of England’s World Cup squad, and he could now be dealt further blows as part of Man United’s transfer plans.

Could Man United cash in on Harry Maguire?

Brown told Football Insider in March that Man United were accelerating talks with Maguire to keep him at the club beyond the end of the season.

They eventually reached an agreement to extend his deal by one year, having established himself as a regular in Carrick’s back line.

However, those higher up at Old Trafford could now look to cash in, despite being warned otherwise, as they aim to bolster their squad.

“Harry Maguire’s future isn’t guaranteed,” Brown told Football Insider.

“If you believe what you read, he’s been offered to a couple of clubs, and from what I’ve heard they wouldn’t rule out the possibility of letting him go.

“I think it would be a ridiculous decision, to be honest, and I would be surprised if he was moved on, but you can never predict what this board will do.

“You can see the difference on the pitch when Maguire is in the side compared to when he’s not, he has a clear impact on the team.

“Plus, he’s an experienced head which helps with the development of people like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven who are just coming through.

“But, the problem is, a lot of the time the club and the owners just see pound signs.

“If the right offer comes in for Maguire, they can let him go to raise a bit of money, and then use that money to sign some new players.

“They want to refresh the squad and improve in key areas, including at centre-back, so it’s possible that selling Maguire could allow them to do that.

“I think he would be a big miss if he was allowed to leave, and it would be shocking to me, but they’re not ruling it out so it could happen.”

How does Michael Carrick feel about losing Maguire?

Maguire’s future at Man United remains up in the air, with the board open to his exit, but there is a feeling he should remain a key part of the starting XI.

His defensive and leadership qualities saw him establish himself as an important player following Carrick’s appointment, and that is unlikely to change.

Brown told Football Insider earlier this year that Maguire has played a crucial role for Carrick and was a big part in helping him land the permanent job.

Alongside his teammates notably including Bruno Fernandes, the centre-back’s upturn in form contributed to a very strong second half of the season.

Even with United aiming to strengthen at the back, Carrick could look to keep hold of Maguire, but the board will likely have the final say.
