Marcus Rashford made his return for Manchester United as they were beaten 2-0 by Hull City in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored for the home side, with Michael Carrick's team making history by losing to a newly-promoted team for the first time ever.

The 28-year-old had not been seen on the pitch for his boyhood team since December 2024, with his fall-out with Ruben Amorim preceding consecutive loans with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Rashford was expected to join Barcelona this summer, but their decision to opt against activating their £26million option to buy has seen him return to Man United.

It remains to be seen whether a move elsewhere will take place before the window shuts, but it appears to be growing likelier that he will a part of Carrick's team this season.

Man United will hope to bounce back against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford next week, with expectations remaining high this season.

How the Manchester United fans received Marcus Rashford

There was a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding Rashford's return to Man United this season.

The winger burned some bridges when he left in 2025, with many fans siding with Amorim's view that he was not offering enough in pre-season.

Yet time has passed since and the Man United faithful have been able to forgive and forget any prior grievances.

BBC Sport correspondent Simon Stone reported that "the Manchester United fans applauded him" when Rashford was stripped and set to make his competitive return.

Laurie Whitwell also reported that the away end were in full voice for the 28-year-old as he jogged over to warm up.

How did Rashford fare on his return?

Rashford replaced Patrick Dorgu at the break, and immediately looked to make inroads down the left wing.

And the England international had some success, creating two chances for his teammates, winning a free-kick and completing a successful dribble.

Hull coped with the winger, however, and were ultimately able to snuff out any moments of space that he earned.

Rashford looks to have already earned some favour with the Man United fans and will likely start against Ipswich, but he and his teammates will need to respond quickly if they are to convince anyone that this season will be any different.
