Man United 27-year-old should be ready for position change after Bruno Fernandes blow
Bruno Fernandes' potentially severe injury blow would have been top of the unwanted list for Manchester United manager Michael Carrick.
The 32-year-old was forced to miss Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday, 27 September, with Jorge Jesus revealing that he played through the pain against Wales.
Undoubtedly, he was a huge a miss, but his teammates still managed to claim another victory, even without his creativity in the final third.
Those back at Old Trafford will be far more concerned about the long-term impacts of this update, though, give his importance in Man United colours.
Fernandes already has four goals and an assist in seven games across all competitions in 2026-27, adding to his 31 contributions from last term.
No United player has more goal contributions than the captain this season, unsurprisingly, but he could now be on the sidelines for a sustained period.
Matheus Cunha should be front and centre at Old Trafford
That, ultimately, would be a huge blow to the Red Devils' aspirations this season, and even more so to Carrick's chances of staying in charge.
The manager does have a very talented squad at his disposal, though, and that could mean that one player features in a different position for United.
Matheus Cunha, while primarily playing left-wing at Old Trafford, is more than comfortable in a central role, and his movement would allow for other stars to shine.
Marcus Rashford could start on the left, with Bryan Mbeumo on the right, and Benjamin Sesko, once fit, through the middle, all supported by Cunha.
In 28 games as an attacking midfielder, the Brazilian, 27, has 14 goals and seven assists, many of which came during his time at Wolves.
Mason Mount running out of chances at Man United
In an ideal world, one player who would step up in an emergency is Mason Mount, whose wage is understood to have been supersized with Champions League football.
Sadly, he just can't be relied on to remain fit, which has been a constant problem for the former Chelsea star since he arrived in 2023.
Of course, losing Fernandes to injury would be a massive blow, but Carrick has more than enough talent to contend with it if not on a long-term basis.
