Man United crisis deepens as full details emerge about Patrick Dorgu injury

Patrick Dorgu will return to Manchester United for treatment on an injury he picked up as Denmark beat Wales 2-0 in the Nations League on Sunday.

The 21-year-old was on the pitch for just 30 minutes before he appeared to pull his hamstring when playing a pass and was forced off.

Michael Carrick will now be sweating over further analysis on the problem, with the manager set for a precarious situation at Old Trafford.

Man United failed to sign a left-back in the summer transfer window despite having had countless targets, and may now be forced to suffer for it.

Luke Shaw is currently Carrick's first choice but has huge availability problems, with his only other natural replacement, Harry Amass, coming off the back of a major hamstring injury.

What is more is that a long period of absence for Dorgu would also increase the pressure on Marcus Rashford, who is Man United's only other natural left-sided winger.

The moment that saw Dorgu injured had been quite an innocuous one, but he clearly knew as soon as it happened.

The left-back immediately placed himself on his back and asked for the medical staff, feeling for the back of his left leg before limping off.

The question for Man United to answer now with upcoming scans will be about the severity of the injury.

Just a mild strain or pull could see Dorgu spend around a week out of action and return soon after the international break, but anything more could result in at least a month out of action.

Fortunately the 21-year-old's ability to walk off the pitch without much assistance would indicate that there is little chance of any tear - which would see him ruled out for at least two months - but that is not an exact science.

Denmark manager Brian Riemer gave an update after the game, and said: "Patrick Dorgu went down today, and it’s simply unfortunate, to put it bluntly.

"He has picked up an injury and has to go home. A replacement has to be called up."

Michael Carrick's emergency option

If it comes to it for Carrick, he has an option more than capable of playing left-back in Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine has only briefly played the position for Man United, but is more than capable.

In fact, when Arsenal and the Red Devils were competing to sign Martinez from Ajax in 2022, Mikel Arteta planned to make him his left-back.

Carrick will hope that Dorgu can return imminently, but there is little doubting that the situation has been prompted by the summer's failures.
