Man United ex-chief scout swipes at 'overpriced' Crysencio Summerville, reveals why he didn't rate him at Leeds
Man United have been told not to pay up to £50million to sign West Ham star Crysencio Summerville this summer by a club insider.
Summerville is nearing the London Stadium exit door as he impresses at the World Cup with the Netherlands.
He has been linked with a move to several Premier League clubs following the Hammers' relegation to the Championship.
Man United are thought to be one of the sides tracking his availability, with West Ham reportedly set to demand around £50m to part ways this summer.
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Summerville is not worth that figure as he remains inconsistent at the top level.
The 24-year-old registered seven goals and three assists in 34 appearances last season, with five of those strikes coming within a month just after the turn of the year.
Insider claims Crysencio Summerville is not worth £50m amid United interest
Summerville has taken on a surprisingly major role for the Netherlands at the World Cup, with two goals in their three games so far.
He is under contract for another three seasons, so West Ham will not be pressured into a sale and can demand a lofty fee despite their relegation.
“I was asked about him many times while he was at Leeds. I don't wish to be disparaging in any way, but I had him down then as a 15-20 minute player. He could bring people into action, do something electric and end up with a shot on goal," Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“That wasn't all him starting, sometimes it was coming on and just having this effect, which concerns me because if he's that influential, why was he not in Leeds’ team?
“Then eventually he's transferred and gone to another team struggling in the box. Now he's had little spells where he's easy on the eye.
“I always ask myself, when I see players like that, am I happy enough with him in the team for 90 minutes? Or am I constantly going to be looking to make changes?
“At the end of the day, you pay your money and you take your choice, but I can't work on that basis.
“He's probably done better than I thought he would at West Ham, and I always have given him credit for that, because I thought it would have to be at a team that could supply him.
“I would be taken aback if he went for £50million, but there's always somebody who gets desperate and can't get a player in, and feels pressure from the supporters.”
Which other clubs are interested in Summerville?
Summerville clearly has talent, but needs to show it over a longer spell rather than in fits and starts.
Numerous sides are keen on tapping into his potential in the coming years, with United interested because Michael Carrick wants to bolster his wing options.
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Aston Villa are chasing Summerville too, while Tottenham also hold an interest in his signature.
Liverpool were previously linked, but recent reports have claimed that they will not make a move for his services this summer.
