Alejandro Balde should be Man United's number one priority as they search to add competition at left-back before the summer deadline passes.

Michael Carrick is aiming to bolster his defensive options before the window closes as United prepare to return to the Champions League.

A new left-back is a top target for the Red Devils to provide competition to Shaw, with Harry Amass expected to leave before next Tuesday's deadline and Patrick Dorgu set to play further forward.

Several players have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, with Barcelona youngster Balde reportedly on their radar.

His La Liga stats from last season show that United must accelerate a move this week, as he would offer them a new dimension compared to Shaw.

Balde is believed to be available for transfer, even though reports have claimed that he is keen to prove himself to Hansi Flick.

Alejandro Balde would be an upgrade on Luke Shaw for Man United

Balde is a product of La Masia and has made 168 appearances for Barcelona's first team since his debut in 2021.

He registered three assists in 42 appearances for the Catalan giants last season as they cruised to another La Liga title, but did struggle for regular starts towards the end of the campaign behind Joao Cancelo.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Man United are preparing to make an offer for Balde as soon as Barca give the go ahead to proceed with a deal.

The 22-year-old's stats from the 2025-26 La Liga campaign prove that United must accelerate a move, as he would be a clear upgrade on the aging Shaw.

Balde produced the same amount of goal contributions (2) than Shaw in 1,357 fewer minutes played, while he created four big chances to the Englishman's one.

Shaw came out on top for interceptions and tackles per 90 minutes, but Balde made more blocks and was dribbled past less per 90.

The Barca star completed more successful dribbles and won more ground duels per 90, while he also lost possession fewer times, made fewer fouls and won more fouls per 90 than Shaw in their respective leagues.

What has Flick said about Balde leaving Barcelona?

Flick did not even include Balde in Barcelona's matchday squad for their La Liga opener against Elche on Sunday amid uncertainty around his future.

The German manager admitted that he felt Balde was not in the right frame of mind to feature when speaking to reporters after the game, saying: "I spoke with him this morning, to be honest. I think he’s not at 100%.

"That's why he’s not here, and that’s why I’ve decided to leave him in Barcelona. I hope he clears his head, and we’ll see what happens on Monday.”
