Man United have 'major concerns' about Omar Berrada's role after Man City scandal update

Published on:

Manchester United have "major concerens" about Chief Executive Omar Berrada amid question marks over his Manchester City role.

The 48-year-old held multiple senior positions at the Etihad before moving across the city, and while he will maintain his innocence, he may have been aware of their rule breaches.

Berrada is likely to avoid any formal sanctions from the Premier League regardless of the outcome of Man City's appeal, with reports claiming he is not concerned.

However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that there may be concerns about the optics of Berrada's involvement at City and potential implications.

This comes amid ongoing doubts about a number of the decision-makers at Old Trafford, with recruitment chief Jason Wilcox also being questioned over his role at United.

Wilcox is also a former City employee, although he was unlikely to have been aware of the situation, but has come under pressure for the job he has done at Old Trafford.

Why are Man United concerned about Omar Berrada?

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness warned Football Insider on 25 September that Man City are almost certain to lose their appeal, and will be punished heavily as a result.

This comes shortly after Man United reported record revenues of £677.6million, with the CEO having issued a statement to celebrate the work they done behind the scenes.

However, despite their financial success, the Man United board continue to face questions about their positions and Berrada's City connections have not helped his case.

"I think questions have to be asked of the Man United decision-makers in general, to be honest," Brown told Football Insider.

"Of course, Berrada's Man City connections are going to be a major concern, because of course he will say he's guilty, but he was in a high-up position while this was happening.

"I don't see any way he didn't know what was going on, to be honest, so those connections are surely going to be looked into, or must have come up at some stage.

"Even just the way it looks, how does it look for Man United to have somebody high up in the club having been so heavily linked to Man City's cheating scandal?

"That's not the only issue with the decision-makers, though, because obviously there are the issues with INEOS and Ratcliffe and all of the backlash they receive.

"Then you've got Jason Wilcox, who I'm still not sure how he got the job when he was in charge of the academy at City and only has limited experience as a recruitment chief.

"All of a sudden he gets the Man United job, and he's trusted with solving years of issues with squad building, bringing the right players in and making these big calls.

"The Berrada issue really underlines it for me, though, because that has got to be worrying at the very least that he may have been involved."

Why are fans unhappy with the Man United board?

Man United's board, cheif executive, owners and top decision-makers have all been under fire for different reasons in recent weeks, with pressure on the club sky-high.

Fans took to Old Trafford to protest during their 1-0 defeat against Man City last month, amid consistent critcisim of the way the club is being run.

Brown told Football Insider on 15 September that Man United's treatment of their fans has been "shocking" and protests will continue to take place if no changes are made.

Early decisions to part with hundreds of staff, raise ticket prices and defund charity work, supposedly in the name of a financial crisis which never came to be, have added up.

This comes amid protests and people speaking out across a number of clubs in the Premier League, with clubs urged to have more respect for those match-going fans.
