Man United medical team to 'assess' Lisandro Martinez as they prepare to accept new offer

Manchester United's medical team will assess Lisandro Martinez as the club consider selling him amid concerns about his injury record.

The 28-year-old limped off during the World Cup final with a thigh injury, adding to his list of recent issues which has seen him miss 92 games since joining United in 2022.

Despite having been tipped to play an important role in Michael Carrick's defence, concerns about his availability could force the Red Devils to cut their losses.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that concerns have grown about Martinez's injury record he could be moved on as a result of his lack of availability.

While there is plenty of admiration for the defender's talents when available, the club have been frustrated by his constant issues and are now assessing their next steps.

Martinez will be evaluated by the medical team at Old Trafford upon his return for pre-season, and if there are lingering issues, it could force them to move him on.

Could Man United accept Lisandro Martinez offer?

Football Insider revealed in April that Man United had no plans to lose Martinez this summer, and he has been seen as a valuable part of Carrick's defensive line.

However, with fresh injury concerns growing and just one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, the club may now be tempted to cut their losses.

Amid reported interest from clubs in Spain, Man United could open the door for offers if they determine his recurring injuries to be a concern.

"It was a real blow for Man United to see Martinez pick up another injury," Brown told Football Insider.

"I'm not sure how serious it was or how long he'll be out for, but obviously it's a concern at the start of a new season when you'd be hoping he would be involved in pre-season.

"He'll have a break now after the World Cup where hopefully he can recover, and then Man United's medical team will have to assess him when he gets back.

"It's just the latest of a few injuries he's had recently, and that's becoming a real concern for Man United because they need him to be available.

"When he's fit and on it, he's a really good centre-back. He's aggressive, he doesn't let you settle, he wins his duels and he's good on the ball as well, he's such a valuable asset.

"But none of that is any good if he's always sat in the stands with an injury, so if there's any indication these issues are going to keep coming up, I expect they'll look to cut their losses.

"There will be interest from clubs in Spain and elsehwere, so I wouldn't be surprised if they considered letting him go."

Why are Man United concerns about Martinez?

Martinez's latest injury has sparked fresh concerns at Man United and forced the club to reconsider his future, despite his obvious quality and role in their squad.

The Argentina international has suffered multiple major injuries in recent years, including significant muscle injuries and a cruciate ligament tear, furthering the worries.

Brown first told Football Insider in March that Man United were concerned about Martinez and closely monitoring his injury issues after yet another blow.

Having fought back from an ACL injury during their last campaign, the defender also struggled with calf issues, likely as a result of his long layoff.

While the extent of his latest blow isn't clear, the fact he was forced off in a World Cup final is not a good sign, and he may now miss the start of the season at Man United.
