Lewis-Skelly, on the other hand, struggled after a strong previous campaign as he was limited to making five PL starts in Arsenal's title-winning campaign.
The Gunners youngster is usually praised for his attacking impact, yet Shaw registered two more goal contributions and created one more big chance than him in the league last season.
Shaw also completed more long balls and crosses per 90 minutes, while he won more ground and aerial duels per 90 too.
Lewis-Skelly lost possession less and committed fewer fouls per 90 than Shaw, but the United star was clearly a better defender when it came to PL matches.
He made more interceptions, tackles, clearances and blocks per 90 than Lewis-Skelly, but he was dribbled past fewer times.
United clearly need a new left-back to bolster their depth with more games on the agenda this season, but the stats show that Lewis-Skelly is not the answer to their problem.
