Man United sensation set to 'block Lewis Hall deal' after impressing Michael Carrick

Manchester United could cool their efforts to sign Newcastle United star Lewis Hall due to the progression of youngster Harry Amass.

The 19-year-old is believed to have impressed Michael Carrick in pre-season, and with Luke Shaw already one senior option ahead of him, United are reluctant to block his pathway.

After positive loan spells at both Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City last season, he has been given the chance to impress his new manager, and has done so this summer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the club have high hopes for Amass and see him as their future left-back, leading to concerns about his pathway.

Shaw is still regarded as the first-choice left-back under Carrick, and has also impressed during the boss' tenure despite his age, with plenty of quality depth in the position.

While Hall remains very highly regarded at Old Trafford and is on their list of targets, there is a feeling other positions will be prioritised in the final month of the window.

Could Man United make a move for Lewis Hall?

Brown told Football Insider in June that Man United hold an interest in Hall, but are unlikely to make a move as things stand, with other priorities ahead of him.

The addition of a third midfield signing remains key for Carrick and his recruitment team, while signing a winger is also ranking highly in their ambitions this summer.

That, combined with plans to leave a route open for Amass to make his mark on the first-team after his pre-season displays, could see United walk away from signing Hall.

"Lewis Hall is a very talented player, there's no doubt about that," Brown told Football Insider.

"It's no surprise he's being linked with a number of the top clubs, and I'm sure Man United will have been looking at him if he was going to be available this summer.

"But signing a new left-back isn't a priority for them right now, they need another central midfielder and a winger before they start thinking about other positions.

"Plus, they've got Luke Shaw there who has been ultra consistent under Michael Carrick and looks to have put his injury issues behind him now.

"Then you've got Harry Amass coming through, who by all accounts is very highly regarded at Man United, and I'm told he has impressed Carrick with his performances in pre-season.

"Amass had some very impressive loan spells last season which have shown he is capable of playing at a high level in senior football.

"So they don't want to block his pathway into the first-team, because he has been tipped for a long time to be the future left-back at Man United when he is ready.

"Signing somebody like Hall, while it could be a good move, isn't something United are desperate to do because it's a position where they think they are strong already and for the future."

What is next for Harry Amass at Man United?

Speculation has been rife about Amass' future at Man United for a number of years now, with clubs having been keen to lure him away since his time in the academy.

Aston Villa had been long-term admirers of him from before he even signed a proffessional contract, while Championship sides remain keen to tempt him away.

Brown first told Football Insider way back in 2024 that Man United had no plans to let Amass leave given their high hopes for his development, and that situation has not changed.

Promising loan spells alongside some very impressive pre-season displays have convinced many at Old Trafford that he should still be in line as one for the future.

That could lead to United making other plans for the future of the position, despite links with potential new options, with high hopes for Amass' future.
