Man United set for '£131m' profit on 'very high-margin product' - Stefan Borson

Manchester United's commercial staff are very talented, and could be the reason for a multi-million pound windfall this season.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that segments of the Old Trafford pitch is turning out to be a "very high-margin product".

The Red Devils are selling off 7cm by 7cm segments of the old pitch at Old Trafford at £125 each, with a new pitch having already been returfed.

These segments have been carefully preserved and presented in a black box, with the first batch selling out almost immediately.

Latest accounts showed losses for the ninth consecutive season, and it is clear that the club are trying anything to raise funds at the Theatre of Dreams.

It is unclear just how much of the pitch is being sold back to the fans, but should it be the entirety, Man United could be in for quite the payday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson suggested that, with a £90 profit on each square, United could make £131million in profit, with the total sale coming to £182.1m.

"What's the margin on that £125? I would suggest, once you take the VAT off, it's about £100 for one of those sections," he said.

"I would suggest that doesn't cost them very much more than £10 to land from China. Where did they send the turf to have it chopped up and put into Perspex?

"Rest assured, it's a very high-margin product. There's only a certain number of times you can do things like that.

"They're good at this stuff, so don't underestimate it. If you were to look at the financial performance on the commercial side, and on the retail side, it's good."

How could Man United raise further funds in January?

There were very limited sales during the summer, with Casemiro and Jadon Sancho leaving as free agents, and Andre Onana joining Trabzonspor on loan.

In a few months, the window will be reopened, and fans will be keen for several other players to be sold and replaced.

Diogo Dalot has emerged as a huge weak link in the current squad, while Joshua Zirkzee's future also needs solving very soon.
