Marcus Rashford: 'There's an opening' at Man United in Michael Carrick's team
Marcus Rashford is set to head back to Manchester United this summer and Michael Carrick has left the door open for a return.
The boss believes the 28-year-old would be an ideal fit for his system as he aims to improve his options on the left wing given a lack of depth in his current squad.
This comes as Barcelona have reached a stalemate in negotiations over his permanent signing, with Man United refusing to budge on their asking price.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Carrick would welcome Rashford back to Old Trafford if he would be willing to stick around.
However, there are doubts about whether the England international would be open to returning to Man United after the public bust-up which forced him out.
Could Marcus Rashford return to Man United?
Brown told Football Insider on 1 June that Rashford's move to Barcelona is off as things stand, with neither club willing to budge on their current stance.
Following the £69million signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, Barca had hoped to agree a cut-price fee or another loan deal for the Man United winger.
However, United are standing by their £26million asking price, and are prepared to invite Rashford back to Old Trafford if an agreement cannot be reahced.
"There are a lot of options for Rashford," Brown told Football Insider.
"If Barcelona aren't going to meet his asking price, he will return to Man United, and I believe Michael Carrick is keen to rebuild any bridges which have been burnt.
"There was a lot said when Rashford left Man United, but his issues were with the previous manager, not with Carrick.
"There's an openining for him on that left-hand side and he would be perfect for the style of play Carrick has put in place since he took over.
"I'm sure, if it's possible, he will be seeing whether he would be willing to come back and play a role, epseically with United now in the Champions League.
"The only problem is about whether Rashford would be open to a return, as by all accounts he had hoped to stay at Barcelona.
"That's still a possibility, of course, but at the moment they can't reach an agreement, so it's whether he will return to Man United or if he will look to move elsewhere.
"From Carrick's side of things, I'm sure he would love to have him back, but it will depend on what Rashford wants to do."
How does Rashford feel about returning to Man United?
Rashford enjoyed a strong loan spell at Barcelona, where he was a regular in Hansi Flick's side and contibuted enormously to their La Liga success.
As a result, he has been keen to remain at the Camp Nou beyond the end of his loan spell, but it has been taken out of his hands by the clubs' negotiations.
Football Insider revealed on 24 May that Barcelona remain in pole position to sign Rashford as he is still prioritising a move back to Spain.
However, if he decides against potential return to Man United, he will have a number of other suitors both in the Premier League and across Europe.
Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain have been long-term admirers, while Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle could revisit prior interest.
