Man United must axe Matheus Cunha as embarrassing in-depth stats emerge
Manchester United were forced to settle for a draw on Sunday as Everton’s last-gasp goal ensured the game ended 2-2 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
It was another disappointing result for Michael Carrick’s side, who had led the game twice against the Toffees.
However, Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ 95th-minute goal meant that United only came away from the clash with just one point.
Many of the Red Devils squad were poor in Merseyside, but perhaps no one was as ineffective as Matheus Cunha.
The attacker was anonymous up top until Carrick eventually hauled him off the pitch after 70 minutes.
Now, ahead of their Champions League tie against Sabah FK, Man United should consider dropping the Brazil international.
How bad was Matheus Cunha vs Everton?
Going into the game, Cunha was not exactly in form.
The striker is yet to score a goal this season and has just picked up one assist.
Against Everton, his lack of attacking threat was on show again, with many of his stats being simply appalling.
According to Fotmob, Cunha had one shot, which was off target, created zero chances, completed 79 per cent of his passes, had a 0.12 xG, had a 0.05 xA, had three touches in the opposition box, lost both of his aerial duels and was dispossessed twice.
His lack of threat up top was no doubt a big factor in why Man United dropped two points against Everton, and now Carrick simply must drop him from the starting XI.
Who could replace Cunha in the starting XI?
The most obvious replacement for Cunha for the Sabah FK clash would be Benjamin Sesko.
The striker was brought on for Cunha against Everton and scored the visitors’ second goal, which appeared to be the winner until Maitland-Niles’ late strike.
After failing to start in any of United’s first three matches this season, Carrick may not be willing to add him back into the line-up after he netted his first goal of the campaign.
However, it remains to be seen what Man United choose to change ahead of their return to the Champions League, after another disappointing result on the road on the weekend.
