New Lisandro Martinez statement fails to quell Man United unrest
Lisandro Martinez' outburst against Manchester United chiefs could affect his future at Old Trafford, sources have told Football Insider.
Following the Red Devils' defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, the Argentine accused the likes of Jason Wilcox of lacking ambition.
Man United have struggled to impress this season, picking up just one win in all competitions so far.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Martinez' comments have added fire to an already increasingly intense period at Old Trafford.
The Argentine, who has started five Premier League matches with a 57.1 per cent aerial duel win rate and 418 touches, may have felt his comments were warranted at the time.
But, it could have a knock on affect to his life at the Manchester-based club.
Lisandro Martinez outburst stalls contract talks
Martinez may have caused his own contract talks to stall at Manchester United.
His comments following facing Atletico Madrid have not been met well inside the Old Trafford club.
And could signal the beginning of the end of his time in M16.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I revealed: "I don’t think he's done himself any favours for his future. He’s coming to the end of his contract at the end of summer; United do have an option in there to try and extend it.
"But look, those comments haven’t gone down very well with the hierarchy at Old Trafford, unsurprisingly. Martinez has released a further statement to try and clarify his outburst after that defeat to Atletico Madrid, but he didn’t apologise for it or anything.
"So the comments were very scathing. There’s no getting away from that. It’s opened up a bit of a can of worms at United right now, which they don’t really need at this present moment, when their form has been quite disappointing, and pressure has been growing on Michael Carrick as well."
Martinez outburst gives Man United more work to do
Next summer was always going to be important for Man United and their defensive ranks.
Harry Maguire's contract expires in June 2027, although there is an option for an additional year.
Meanwhile, young defenders Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are too inexperienced to be leading the backline.
If Martinez does ultimately leave following his outburst, that could see United require an additional defensive signing.
And that is already on top of the need to bring a new left-back to Old Trafford.
