Eddie Howe would be "interested" in the prospect of being Manchester United manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The 48-year-old is currently taking a break from football after leaving Newcastle United in the summer, but is on the radar of the Red Devils at the moment.

United have no immediate plans to sack Michael Carrick, but are weighing up possible contingency plans if results continue to be an issue.

Howe has plenty of admirers behind the scenes at Old Trafford, and the prospect of moving to take charge of the club is understood to appeal to him.

However, with United's hierarchy keen to give Carrick time to turn the team's fortunes around, no change is in the pipeline in the immediate future.

United have won just one of their opening five Premier League games, and will be hoping for a swift turnaround after the international break.

Eddie Howe ticks 'two big boxes' for Man United

Howe took Newcastle to new heights during his tenure in charge at St James' Park, as he twice led them into the Champions League and also won the Carabao Cup back in 2025.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Howe is in no rush to return to management in the coming months, but would be tempted if a huge club came calling.

United would certainly fit the bill, and it is clear that there is also admiration towards Howe from within the club.

Football Insider revealed on Monday that the former Bournemouth boss ticks "two big boxes" for the United hierarchy, given that he has ample experience in both the Premier League and Champions League.

The club have tried and failed with bosses from around the world in recent years, and it is understood that they would opt for someone who has been a proven success in the Premier League if Carrick were to depart.

'It's a real priority' - Man United set sights on multiple signings ahead of January

Man United set sights on multiple January deals

Football Insider revealed last weekend that United are targeting several additions to their defence in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils were unable to strengthen their backline in the summer, and it has now emerged as a "real priority" for them heading into the winter.

Several of United's key defensive options are ageing and nearing the end of their contracts, which has created a need for a refresh at the back.

Carrick is keen to prioritise an overhaul of the defence ahead of the second half of the season, with further midfield reinforcements the next item on the agenda.
