Sources: Man United locked in Bruno Fernandes talks
Manchester United are in talks with Bruno Fernandes over his future as the possibility remains that he could leave next year, sources have told Football Insider.
The Portuguese midfielder has been United's most important player over the last few years and has been captain since 2023.
His outstanding goal contributions record was key to the club securing a Champions League return this season.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, while Fernandes' future is often talked about, discussions to extend his deal are still underway.
As of right now, the 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract, with him on course to leave at the end of the season.
But the Red Devils have the option to add a further year with the goal of keeping him in Manchester longer than 2028.
What is the latest on Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United talks?
Keeping Fernandes at Manchester United is an important step for the Red Devils.
While he has not yet showcased the form and numbers he was hitting per game last season, there is no denying that the attacking midfielder is one of the best around.
His influence inside the dressing room is also key, with it difficult to replace those senior voices should they leave.
And Manchester United have no plans to currently allow the Portuguese international to depart.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I shared: "United are still in contract talks with Fernandes over a new deal. His contract is due to expire in 2027, but United do have an option to extend that for a further year.
"And obviously the two parties are in ongoing negotiations to see if they can sort out a longer-term deal for Fernandes."
"Obviously nothing’s been agreed as yet, but United have no plans to lose Bruno Fernandes anytime soon, and we know how important a player he is to the team."
Fernandes’ return to form could transform Man United’s fortunes
If Fernandes can rediscover his best form, it could have a significant impact on Manchester United’s performances and results.
We saw last season how influential a firing Fernandes can be on Man United, helping guide them into the Champions League places.
However, when Fernandes is struggling to produce those match-winning moments, United can look a far less dangerous side.
Perhaps if a contract extension can be agreed sooner rather than later, it could provide a lift to both the squad and Fernandes' confidence.
But we will have to wait and see how long that takes.
