Manchester United are plotting a move to sign Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old has impressed with some top-class performances for Forest over the last two seasons and is now firmly on Man United's radar in the summer window.

Despite Nottingham Forest holding talks over a new contract, there is a feeling at Old Trafford that they could turn his head as they aim to bolster their full-back positions.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Man United scouts have been keeping a close eye on Williams' performances for Nottingham Forest.

They could now be tempted to make a move to lure him away from the City Ground, with his versatility and ability to play on both sides of the defence a key asset.

Michael Carrick is determined to bolster his side, and having completed two major signings already this summer, is now eyeing other key areas of his starting XI.

Could Man United make a move to sign Neco Williams?

Football Insider revealed in April that Carrick has identified the addition of a new left-back among his priorities to improve at Man United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Williams has emerged as a leading contender for the position, with scouts wowed by his performances at the City Ground, and they could now be tempted to make a move.

The Wales international has long been admired at Old Trafford despite his connection to rivals Liverpool, and could make the controversial move if terms can be agreed.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Neco Williams has been on the radar of a number of clubs in the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window.

"He's such a versatile player as well, he can play at right-back and at left-back, which he has predominantly done for Nottingham Forest over the last couple of seasons.

"He's a player that I'm sure Man United scouts are well aware of and have been keeping tabs on in the last 12 months or so to improve at left-back.

"As I said, he’s such a versatile player, he would be a dream for any manager because of his versatility that he can play right back or left back as well.

"It is an area of the team that United are looking to strengthen in long term due to Luke Shaw not getting any younger and maybe that right back spot not being nailed down by anybody either."

How do Nottingham Forest feel about selling Williams?

Despite Man United's growing interest in Williams as they aim to bolster their squad at full-back, any deal will ultimately depend on Nottingham Forest's willingness to sell.

Following the appointment of Oliver Glasner, the City Ground club are making ambitious plans for the future and are extremely reluctant to lose any of their star players.

Meanwhile, Football Insider reported in May that Nottingham Forest could send out a statement of intent by extending Williams' contract despite the growing interest.

His current deal is set to run until 2029, having extended his stay last summer, but the club are keen to deter growing interest with the offer of a new deal.

Man United are not the only club keen on the Wales international, however, with Tottenham also believed to be interested in luring him away from Forest.
