Sources: Man United shortlist Antonio Conte after statement
Antonio Conte is on Man United's shortlist of potential next managers if they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick, sources have told Football Insider.
Conte recently came out with a statement that made his intent clear to return to management with a club that has "lost sight of its history" so he can make them winners again.
Many fans and pundits across Europe took his words as a subtle hint at becoming the United boss in the near future.
The 57-year-old has long been touted as a potential appointment for Old Trafford chiefs, having previously impressed as Chelsea manager.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, he is admired by the Red Devils' hierarchy, but they are not planning to hand him the reins as it stands.
Carrick has retained their trust so far, despite a tough start to the campaign, with more time being offered to turn their form around.
Michael Carrick could be succeeded by Antonio Conte at Man United
Conte has been out of management since leaving Napoli at the end of last season, just 12 months on from leading them to the Serie A title.
He remains one of the most sought-after managers in the world right now, and United are keeping him in mind but will not rush to sack Carrick as it stands.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "If Manchester United do make a decision to look for a new manager and get rid of Michael Carrick, Antonio Conte will be one of the names in the frame. He is a proven winner, as shown by his spell at Chelsea and the great success he has had in Italy as well.
"He's out of work, so it would be lot easier to try and bring him in. Obviously people were putting two and two together with Manchester United and him, but look, they are sticking with Carrick for now and they're hoping that he can turn things around.
"Conte, because of his previous record of success and obviously him being out of work, he's going to be on a number of clubs' lists if they do want to make a managerial change."
United considering Eddie Howe appointment after Carrick decision
Sources have also exclusively revealed to Football Insider that former Newcastle boss Howe is on United's radar if Carrick is relieved of his duties.
The 48-year-old would be a cost-effective, Premier League-proven option if the board feel they need to make a change soon.
Howe is taking some time out of the game after five breathtaking, but successful, years at Newcastle, yet would be keen to return to management at Old Trafford.
