Sources: Man United work on agreeing 'huge' player deal
Bruno Fernandes' contract talks are still moving ahead despite his poor form for Manchester United, sources have told Football Insider.
It has been a terrible season on all fronts for the Portuguese midfielder so far, with results not going Man United's way.
Fernandes, who broke the assist record in the Premier League last season, has so far managed just one in all competitions.
But as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, that has not changed the stance within Old Trafford over his future.
Talks are still underway to keep him longer than his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of this season.
While there is an option for a further year, United are hoping to tie him to new terms, putting mention of any concerns to bed.
Man United still want Fernandes to stay despite concerns over his form
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider that there were "serious concerns" over the form Fernandes has found himself in.
Putting doubt over whether the 32-year-old would remain longer term at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese midfielder has been far from his best, with him failing to reproduce the same level of influence from 2025-26.
And that has been evident in the results that manager Michael Carrick has brought in.
However, it seems Fernandes' form will not impact his future at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils' plans emerging.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I shared: "Michael Carrick admitted he was carrying a bit of an injury as well, so I’d fully expect Bruno Fernandes to play his way out of this dip in form.
"And his importance to United still can’t be underestimated, he's a huge player for them so I’m sure that those contract talks will continue and United will hope they can convince him to stay."
Fernandes' injury would explain his form
Form is temporary, and class is permanent could not be truer when it comes to Fernandes.
Last season he similarly started the season, albeit he was played in a deeper, less impactful role by Ruben Amorim.
However, if his injury is hampering his form, then once that subsides, the Fernandes who has been having such a significant impact on this United team should return.
But we will have to wait and see if that is actually the case, or rather, signs of regression from the United skipper.
