Sources: Man United’s January priority signing revealed
Man United will be focusing on bolstering their defensive options in January ahead of any other positions, sources have told Football Insider.
The Red Devils' slow start to the season has accentuated the need for new recruits in the next transfer window.
They have been linked to several forwards ahead of January, with Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey re-emerging onto their radar.
Michael Carrick's midfield depth has also been criticised despite the recent arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, United will mainly focus on signing new defenders in the new year after failing to improve their backline in the summer.
Carrick's job is under threat as it stands, and it remains to be seen if he will still be in charge at Old Trafford by the time the next window rolls around.
Defensive signings remain the priority for Man United in January
The Red Devils boss wanted to sign a new left-back in the summer, but United instead focused on other positions.
Carrick's side have already shipped eight goals in five league games so far, while they crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 defeat to Brighton on 16 September.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "For United right now, a new striker is not a top priority. (The priority is) probably rebuilding the defence, as obviously they have done the forward line and midfield in the last two summers.
"Going forward, United are looking to improve and restructure that defence, which will be the next stage of their process of rebuilding the squad."
Man United planning Luke Shaw talks despite left-back search
Shaw impressed last season but concerns around his long-term fitness were raised ahead of this term.
The 31-year-old has started this campaign as Carrick's first-choice left-back, with one assist in four appearances, yet could see more competition for his services arrive in January.
Despite their plans, sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that United want to hold contract talks with Shaw in the new year.
His current deal is set to expire in June 2027, but the club are keen to see him pen fresh terms for at least one more campaign.
