Stefan Borson hits back at Ruben Amorim-Man United compensation claim: 'It's not in the accounts'
Manchester United saving millions in compensation on Ruben Amorim's exit make no sense when looking at the club's accounts.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the accounts don't "match" reports emerging this summer.
Amorim was sacked by the Red Devils in January, bringing in Michael Carrick as his replacement, which has turned out to be a stroke of genius at Old Trafford.
Following his departure, though, Man United have reportedly been paying off a £15million-plus compensation package for the head coach and his staff.
Amorim seems to have failed upwards, though, being appointed by Serie A giants AC Milan this summer, with reports detailing that his compensation fee will now drop drastically because of the move.
This is now being heavily disputed by a finance expert, who has checked over the Red Devils' accounts to fact-checked the emerging news.
Man United accounts spark questions over Ruben Amorim news
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson shut down the idea that United are set to save money on Amorim following his move to AC Milan.
"I don't know where, and I've looked at the accounts and it doesn't match, they've got £8m or £9m that they're going to save," he said.
"Unless the situation was that there was a potential that if he didn't work for another year they'd have to pay him another £8m-£9m, maybe.
"But in terms of getting £8m-£9m back, it looks like they actually paid in cash the £16.7m that are in the accounts. There doesn't seem to be any way in which they only paid £8m or £9m of it.
"That's not what the accounts say. I mean, it is not impossible, but it's not what the accounts say. So I don't really understand the story.
"But we'll see. If they can make that saving of money, and they don't have to pay out, that's great news, obviously."
Which Man United players could AC Milan now sign?
While Amorim didn't leave Old Trafford on the best of terms, he could certainly rebuild some of the relationships during the summer transfer window.
One player that wouldn't be a surprise to see make the switch is Manuel Ugarte, who has already played under the manager at two separate clubs.
Amorim continued to play him over the talented Kobbie Mainoo, who is now one of the most consistent players under Carrick's reign.
It wouldn't be a shock to see Joshua Zirkzee appear on AC Milan's radar either, while Andre Onana could make a switch to Italy after a decent spell for Trabzonspor.
