'The outstanding candidate is Djed Spence' - Man United plan revealed by Insider

Manchester United are plotting a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Djed Spence following his outstanding World Cup displays.

The 25-year-old has been watched closely by the recruitment team at Old Trafford as they aim to bolster their full-back options in the summer transfer window.

Spurs, meanwhile, are expected to listen to offers for the England international in a bid to raise funds as they continue to spend big in the market.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Spence ranks highly on the Red Devils' list of potential full-back targets in the summer window.

Michael Carrick has identified the addition of a new left-back as a priority as he aims to strengthen the position, while Spence's ability to play on both flanks is seen as an asset.

Should Tottenham open the door to the England international's departure, Man United are now prepared to join rival clubs in the race and will be hopeful of agreeing terms.

Could Man United make a move to sign Djed Spence?

Football Insider revealed in April that Carrick has identified the addition of a new left-back among his priorities to improve at Man United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Spence's performances for England at the World Cup have made him an outstanding target for Man United, and he is now believed to be firmly on the club's radar.

While it is currently unclear what Roberto De Zerbi has planned for the full-back when he returns to North London, their rivals are readying moves to tempt him away.

"Man United want to sign a new full-back and they've been looking at a few options," Brown told Football Insider.

"Ideally, they want to bring in somebody who can play on both sides of the defence for additional cover, and the outstanding candidate who ticks that box would be Djed Spence.

"He was fantastic for England at the World Cup, including in the defeat to Argentina where he was so impactful going forward and getting back.

"Scouts will have been watching him there, not just for Man United but for a number of clubs, and I expect they've been very impressed by what they've seen.

"He's exactly the type of signing Man United are looking to bring in, and if Tottenham are prepared to let him go, I'd imagine they will be willing to make a move.

"Luke Shaw is the first-choice left-back at the moment, and he will be hard to displace, but Spence would be a much younger option so it would make a lot of sense."

Man United are far from alone in their pursuit of Spence, with a number of clubs across Europe having been impressed by what they saw during England's World Cup campaign.

Inter Milan and Liverpool have been tipped as some of the most high-profile suitors of the full-back, with both European giants lining up moves to temp him in.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider on 17 July that Everton are preparing to accelerate their interest in Spence, having been keeping an eye on his displays.

David Moyes is keen to strengthen his full-back options this summer, and Spence's ability to play on both sides of the defence has placed him firmly on their radar.

While a deal may be difficult to pull off given the finances involved after the quality of his performances for England, the Toffees are now keen to test the waters over a deal.
