Sources: Man United turn attention to Wesley ahead of January
Manchester United are keeping tabs on Roma right-back Wesley ahead of the upcoming January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The 23-year-old has primarily operated as a right wing-back for Roma of late, but can also play on the left, as well as slotting into a back four as a more natural full-back.
Sources say that Wesley's versatility holds the "key" to United's interest, as Michael Carrick's side are in the market for reinforcements in both full-back positions.
They tried and failed to secure a long-term successor to Luke Shaw in the summer, while Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are both out of contract in 2028.
The Red Devils have been clear admirers of Wesley for some time now, but it will not be cheap for them to strike a deal.
Roma holding out for £50m for Wesley
Wesley has impressed for Roma since he joined them from Flamengo back in 2025, and his stock has continued to rise of late.
The defender has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet for Gian Piero Gasperini, and has also broken into the senior Brazil team for the first time.
As a result, recent reports in Italy have suggested that Roma view him as being a £50million player, with that price tag even having potential to rise further.
United have been clear admirers of Wesley over a sustained period, but that price tag may prove prohibitive for them in the middle of the season.
However, their desire to strengthen in the full-back positions remains a clear priority for the Old Trafford outfit, and Wesley has already been established as a clear target in that department.
Man United doing 'due diligence' on Lisandro Martinez replacement
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider last weekend that his former club are doing "due diligence" on several options to replace centre-back Lisandro Martinez.
The Argentine questioned the work of technical director Jason Wilcox after the recent defeat to Atletico Madrid, and that has forced his future into doubt ahead of his contract expiring next summer.
Brown believes that United's defence needs immediate work, and feels that Martinez's inconsistency has outlined him as a prime candidate to be the first man to be replaced.
United have the option to potentially extend his current deal by a further year, but that appears to be a distant possibility at this stage.
